Hedging and Stone Walling Competition

The Llanthony Valley and District Show Society's Hedging and Stone Walling Competition takes place each year in a different location within the Llanthony Valley Show area. The main idea of this event is to promote the interest in these two rural local skills, therefore hopefully encouraging more of this type of work. A Training Day for the Hedging takes place a few weeks before the competition, and people with all levels of experience are encouraged to take part. This is a suitable competition for first time competitors where the friendly, helpful atmosphere can help overcome all nerves!

Stone Walling

There are two elements to this competition, the first is for work done within the local area in the preceding twelve months and may be mortar or dry stone walls. This event is judged and photographed before the competition day, where the results and photographs are on display. This has been very successful in encouraging good craftsmanship on local house renovations. The classes are Best Mortar Wall and Best Dry Wall.

The second element is a dry stone wall competition on the day. Each competitor has a 2 yard section of wall to complete in the course of one day. This competition is suitable for novices and professionals alike. Prizes for Best Local, Youngest Competitor and Open Wall.

Hedging

This competition attracts professionals in the Open Classes, locals in the Farmer's Class and Young Farmers. Also judged is the Best Regrowth from the previous year's competition.
